The fever of a mythical series

In April 2011, the first episode of one of the most expensive television series of all time was released. There were eight seasons and over sixty episodes of drama and bloodshed with this medieval fantasy created by David Benioff and DB Weiss and produced by HBO.

The origin is in the novel The Chronicles of Ice and Fire , by the American George RR Martin. In the books, the author recounts the experiences of characters from different noble houses on the fictional continent of Westeros, whose objective is to control the Iron Throne and rule the seven kingdoms.

There are many characters involved in this exciting story. Some are warriors and brave, and others more treacherous, but with a common denominator: they bear names beyond interesting. Would you like to meet some of them?

Game of Thrones Names for Boys

  • Bran: is a diminutive of the name Brandon, of English origin, which means ‘hill covered with bushes’. In Celtic culture, it is the name of the god of the underworld, represented by a raven. In the series, Bran Stark, whom we’ll know as the ‘Three-Eyed Raven’, is the son of Ned and Catelyn.
  • Daario: is a variant of Darío, which is of Greek origin and means ‘one who keeps good’. In Game of Thrones, Daario Naharis is one of the commanders of the Stormcrows mercenary company.
  • Eddard: also known as ‘Ned’, is the patriarch of the Stark family, “Lord of Winterfell and Guardian of the North”. Noble and loyal. One of the most upstanding characters.
  • Jon: is the Basque variant of Juan, which is of Hebrew origin and means ‘God is merciful’. In the series, Jon Snow is the bastard son of Eddard Stark, who took him in and always treated him like his other children. Character that becomes relevant as the plot progresses and that is gentle and noble. Join the Night’s Watch.
  • Sandor: is the Hungarian variant of Alexander, whose Greek meaning is ‘defender of men’. In the series, Sandor Clegane is a member of the Royal Guard and did not have many admirers.
  • Syrio: one of the most important characters in the saga. He is a noble and cultured man and it is he who teaches the Water Dance to Arya Stark. It was also the First Sword of Braavos.
  • Theon: is a name of Greek origin that means ‘pious’. As a child, he was protected by the Stark family and raised as one of them.
  • Tyrion: is one of the most beloved characters. Thanks to his cunning, education and humor, he manages to position himself as King’s Hand in Westeros and Acting King in Meereen, in the absence of Daenerys.

  • Arya: is a variant of Aria, of Sanskrit origin, which means ‘noble, air, song’. She is the daughter of Eddard and Catelyn Stark and one of the most warrior characters in the series, which brought her great popularity.
  • Brienne: is the derivation of Briana’s series, female variant of Brian, which means ‘strong, virtuous, honorable’. Brienne of Tarth is the only daughter and heir of Lord Selwyn Tarth of Evening Manor, whose family owes allegiance to House Baratheon. She never wanted to be a lady and was always interested in chivalry.
  • Daenerys: is the only daughter of Aerys II Targaryen, “the Mad King”. She is secretly transferred to the city of Braavos after Robert Baratheon’s rebellion, in which her father was murdered. Her evolution has made her an icon and her full title is Daenerys of House Targaryen, First of her name, Stormborn, The Unburnt, Mother of Dragons, Chainbreaker, Mother of Slaves, Khaleesi of the Dothraki, Queen of Mereen, Queen of Westeros, Of the Andals, Of the first men, Mistress and Protector of the seven kingdoms.

  • Khaleesi: Daenerys Targaryen acquires this title during the first season, when she is forced to marry Khal Drogo.
  • Melisandre: is the French variant of Millicent, which is of Germanic origin and means ‘strong at work’. In Game of Thrones she is known as The Red Woman, a priestess in the service of R’hllor, the Lord of Light.
  • Sansa: is a name of Sanskrit origin that means ‘praise, enchantment’. Her character in the series is Sansa Stark, who starts out as a shallow girl and ends up becoming a brave woman.
